Why 48GB modules exist

DDR5 allows non power of two module capacities, so 24GB and 48GB sticks are possible where DDR4 only had 8, 16 and 32. A pair of 48GB modules gives you 96GB while keeping dual channel and only using two slots, which almost always runs faster than filling four slots with smaller sticks.

Check board support first. Not every motherboard has a validated memory profile for 48GB modules, particularly older DDR5 boards. A BIOS update is often required, and on some boards these simply will not train. Verify your board's qualified vendor list before ordering.
